The Compton Heights Concert Band's Sousa Sundays Each Sunday July 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2013 7:30 PM Purser Center Logan College of Chiropractic Chesterfield, Missouri Guest Artists: Canadian Brass The Compton Heights Concert Band's "Sousa Sundays" series at the Purser Center started with the fantastic Canadian Brass ensemble! This 5-piece brass world acclaimed ensemble appeared previously with the Compton Heights Band’s annual 2010 Holiday Pops Spectacular at Powell Hall. They performed a dazzling exhibition of virtuosi playing that was amazing and highly enjoyable. (Photo by Steve Blackburn YYZ Events) Sousa Sundays Week #2 - July 14, 2013 7:30 PM Sigrun Hjalmtysdottir "Diddú", Soprano The Compton Heights Concert Band's "Sousa Sundays" series at the Purser Center continued the 2nd week with the Sigrun “Diddú” Hjalmtysdottir, soprano, the Icelandic Storm! Diddú, an Icelandic actress, movie star and opera/crossover singing star has appeared on a number of occasions with the Band and with her vivacious personality wins over every audience with her incredible singing and charm. She has sung with tenors Jose Carreras and Plácido Domingo, and is very active in European concert halls and stage productions. (Sigrun Hjalmtysdottir and Jose Carreras with the Iceland Symphony.) Sousa Sundays Week #3 - July 21, 2013 7:30 PM Buckwheat Zydeco, Creole Dance Music The Compton Heights Concert Band's "Sousa Sundays" series continued at the Purser Center with Buckwheat Zydeco who appeared with the Compton Heights Band in its summer series many years ago. The ensemble is known for its lively Louisiana Creole Dance Music. Based in Lafayette, Louisiana, they travel worldwide with Buckwheat as the lead singer and phenomenal accordion player. They danced in the aisles at this exciting concert! (Buckwheat Zydeco) Sousa Sundays Week #4 - July 28, 2013 7:30 PM Lindsay Garritson, Piano The Compton Heights Concert Band's "Sousa Sundays" series finale at the Purser Center featured St. Louis’ own Lindsay Garritson. This outstanding young musician from St. Louis and Principia graduate was one of 30 semi-finalists in the Van Cliburn competition which attracted hundreds of sterling pianists to competitions in London, Moscow and other major cities around the world and the United States. She presented a stunning rendition of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” by the Compton Heights Band. Her father, Paul Garritson, is a professional clarinetist who has played with the Compton Heights Concert Band as well as her mother, Marie Garritson, a flutist; her sister is an accomplished pianists. St. Louisans joined in the rousing reception she received by her local fans, friends and family! This concert was a glorious finale to the “Sousa Sundays” series by the Compton Heights Concert Band.
